We’re proud to share that we have been officially accredited by Maritime New Zealand to conduct final oral examinations for seafarers pursuing their Certificates of Competency!!


This huge milestone is a reflection of our commitment to high standards in maritime education and assessment. Our examiner (O'Shea Butler) brings real-world sea-going experience and a supportive, fair approach to the exam room—ensuring that candidates are evaluated professionally and in a manner which reflects the needs of the industry


We are currently able to offer examinations for the following grades (and there's more on the way!):

 

  • Skipper Coastal/Offshore (SCO)

  • Less than 500 gross tonnage endorsement (<500 GT)

  • Master on Ships less than 500 GT (MR<500GT)

  • Skipper Restricted Limits (Nautical) (SRL (Nautical))

  • Master Yacht less than 24m (MY<24)

  • Chief Mate (CM)

  • Able Seafarer Deck (AB Deck)

  • Deck Watch Rating (DWR)

  • Master Yacht less than 500 GT (MY<500GT)

  • Chief Mate on Ships less than 3000 GT (CM<3000GT)

  • Master on Ships less than 3000 GT (MR<3000GT)

  • Master Yacht (MY)

  • Chief Mate Yacht (CMY)

  • Qualified Deck Crew (QDC)

  • Master on Ships less than 500 GT in the near coastal area (MR<500GT NC)

  • Watchkeeper Deck (WKD)

  • Watchkeeper Deck on Ships less than 500 GT in Near Coastal Area (WKD<500GT NC)

Examinations are offered in person anywhere in New Zealand, as well as online via Zoom, providing easy access to seafarers home and abroad


To keep things fair for everyone, and to ensure integrity of the examination process, we cannot perform examinations for students who have engaged Voyager Marine Education for Oral Exam Practice or Mentoring Sessions. O'Shea is a Maritime Consultant, Examiner and Master Mariner based in Nelson, New Zealand. With over 15 years at sea aboard passenger ships, he has sailed to more than 90 countries. More recently, he has started Voyager Marine Solutions, preparing and examining maritime students, as well as offering expert-led courses and mentoring. O’Shea combines real-world experience with a passion for teaching the next generation of seafarers.
